RACE REPORT
A FRUSTRATING NIGHT

Early Race Incident Takes McDowell Out of Contention at Chicagoland Speedway

JOLIET, Ill. (July 13, 2008) – Michael McDowell was taken out of contention when another car ran into his #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota Camry at the beginning of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway resulting in a 43rd-place finish.

"Another car ran into us and crashed us," McDowell said. "I don't know if he (Jason Leffler) got loose or what happened there. We'll bounce back."

Qualifying was canceled due to rain and as the field was set by the NASCAR rulebook McDowell started 34th on Saturday. As the green flag waved for the 43-car-field, McDowell radioed to his pit crew on Lap 4 that he had substantial damage to his #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota Camry.

"After the deal happened with the 70 car, the toe was messed up quite a bit and the rear end housing was skewed pretty good," McDowell said. "We also had a vibration."

McDowell went five laps down while his Michael Waltrip Racing team worked on his car on pit road as the LifeLock.com 400 remained under green.

"It's just unfortunate," McDowell said. "We lost a bunch of laps and there was no way to recover. The guys did a good job working on the car to make it drivable. Even though we were out of contention, I think we were able to learn a few things during the race."

As McDowell was determined to finish the 267-lap race, misfortune struck for Michael Waltrip when the #31 car made contact with his #55 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry sending it sailing across the frontstretch grass near Lap 111. Waltrip soldiered on to finish 36th after his car also suffered damage.

David Reutimann had better luck and ran in the top-15 during most of the race to finish 14th in his #44 UPS Toyota Camry.

All three Michael Waltrip Racing teams have maintained a top-35 position in the owner points. McDowell is currently 35th and is looking to hold on to a coveted spot as his new crew chief Peter Sospenzo starts on Monday.

"I'm really looking forward to spending some time with Peter," McDowell said. "He's got a lot of experience and that will help us as we fight to stay inside the top-35."

JOLIET, Ill. (July 10, 2008) - Storms caused NASCAR officials to cancel qualifying at Chicagoland. The grid for Saturday's LifeLock.com 400 will be determined by the rulebook. Michael McDowell will start from 34th position, a few spots behind his MWR teammates, Michael Waltrip (28th) and David Reutimann (29th)

Rain also cut NASCAR Sprint Cup Series first practice a little short, but in the end McDowell seemed to be pleased with the handling of his car. McDowell's fastest lap was a 30.390 (177.690 mph), which placed him 21st in practice.

"The car was pretty good in practice," McDowell said. "We really wanted to qualify because we would have had a good starting position."

Last season, McDowell won from the pole in the ARCA RE/MAX Series event and led every lap at Chicagoland Speedway. McDowell earned at total of four victories in the division en route to a second-place finish in the championship standings. On Saturday, his focus is to top his career-best NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finish.

Following the race this weekend, McDowell will begin establishing a relationship with his new crew chief Peter Sospenzo. Sospenzo has worked for teams like Penske Racing and Hendrick Motorsports to name a few and has won NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races with Jeremy Mayfield and Joe Nemechek.

"Michael is young, ambitious and seems like a really good guy," Sospenzo said. "I can't wait to get started and move forward with him. Hopefully, we will have some good things ahead of us and we can build a long-lasting relationship."

RACE PREVIEW
FAMILIAR TERRITORY

McD Dominant in Former Series at Chicagoland Speedway and Has Strong Connection to Area

JOLIET, Ill. (July 9, 2008) - Michael McDowell started on the pole, led every lap and won the ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Chicagoland Speedway last season. Now, McDowell is eager to stand out in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with his #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota Camry team on Saturday during the LifeLock.com 400.

"It's good to go back to tracks a second time especially tracks where I have won at before," McDowell said. "Last year, we won the pole and led every lap to win the ARCA race. We're hoping for a good finish on Saturday."

McDowell also wants to excel at the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval this weekend because he has strong ties to the Chicago area.

"My family is from Chicago," McDowell said. "My dad was born there and my grandfather still lives there. It's always nice to go back to see everyone."

Before traveling to Chicago to visit his family, McDowell is testing at Kentucky Speedway today.

"We are testing today at Kentucky Speedway before Chicago," McDowell said. "Kentucky is very similar to Chicagoland Speedway. The shapes are alike. The biggest difference will be the tires. Otherwise, we hope to learn some things that will transfer over to this weekend."

The Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender admits there is still work to be done on Michael Waltrip Racing's intermediate track program.

"The 1.5-mile tracks have been one of our weak points," McDowell said. "I have not been able to test much because Kentucky has had so much rain and that has hindered our tests. Also, when we were gearing up for the new season, we put a lot of emphasis on speedway cars to make the Daytona 500. Now, we are trying to catch up."

There still have been noteworthy finishes according to McDowell.

"David Reutimann had a top-10 finish in the #44 UPS Toyota Camry at Lowe's Motor Speedway, which is a 1.5-mile quad-oval," McDowell said. "He had a strong showing. Also, Michael Waltrip has had a couple of good runs. We've just got to build on that and make our program stronger. We need a good finish this weekend."

MWR HIRES SOSPENZO AS CREW CHIEF OF #00 CHAMPION MORTGAGE TOYOTA CAMRY FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON

CORNELIUS, N.C. (July 9, 2008) - Today, Michael Waltrip Racing announced Peter Sospenzo will take over as crew chief of the #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota Camry beginning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the remainder of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Bill Pappas, who previously served as Michael McDowell's crew chief, will advance to head of engineering.

"Walking into Michael Waltrip Racing for the first time last night, I was surprised by how beautiful the facility is and how efficient the operation has become and I am really looking forward to working here," Sospenzo said. "When I heard there may be a change, I started talking to Dr. Eric Warren and Cal Wells. I worked with Ryan Pemberton at Ginn Racing and stayed in touch with him. It's going to be nice to work with him again and also work with Bobby Kennedy."

McDowell welcomes the new opportunity.

"Peter has been in the business for years and worked with teams like Penske and Hendrick Motorsports," McDowell said. "He has a lot of experience and has been successful at his job. This is a new opportunity that the #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota Camry team will take advantage of to improve our performance."

The deal was finalized overnight and Sospenzo is eager to work with McDowell during his rookie year.

"He's young, ambitious and seems like a really good guy," Sospenzo said. "I can't wait to get started and move forward with him. Hopefully, we will have some good things ahead of us and we can build a long-lasting relationship."

Sospenzo looks forward to his newfound position at Michael Waltrip Racing and hopes to return to Victory Lane in the near future.

"I won with Jeremy Mayfield at California and Pocono (2000) and with Joe Nemechek at Richmond (2003)," Sospenzo said. "I have been able to work with some great teams and drivers and I'm proud to now be a part of Michael Waltrip Racing."
